Flight Object Workshop

17 Jun 2008

Steady progress is being made towards the implementation of the Flight Object in Europe. The Flight Object will provide a single common reference for shared flight information between all stakeholders; in effect a SWIM for Flight Information.

An implementation of the Flight Object for ATC, and the definition of an ATC-ATC interface are being undertaken by the ITEC and COFLIGHT Flight Data Processing projects. This work is based on the EUROCONTROL Flight Object model, which includes all types of stakeholders (including Aircraft Operators, Airport Operators, Aircraft, Military Units, and Flow Management), as well as ATC.

Work has also recently started to expand the implementation of the Flight Object beyond ATC. A detailed study has been launched of how to integrate the CFMU systems with the new FDP systems using the Flight Object. In addition the SESAR programme has adopted the Flight Object as the means to share Flight Information and is defining future activities.

Similar developments are taking place in the USA; the FAA and EUROCONTROL work together to benefit from each other's experiences and to harmonise their concepts where necessary, as well as to encourage the wider adoption of the Flight Object throughout the globe.

The road to Mongolia

Tom Bernard, our IT man, is taking part in a charity event to personally deliver a 4x4 vehicle to a Mongolian children's charity by participating in The Mongolia Charity Rally. Their expedition starts in London on July 5th 2008, driving via the Caucasus and Central Asia, and arriving in Ulaan Bataar five weeks and eight thousand miles later.

Fundraising World Fuel Services, as a corporate sponsor, has enabled them to buy a Mitsubishi Pajero 2.5L Turbo Diesel. They are now fundraising for diesel to get them to Mongolia (so any help would be appreciated). Each team member also contributes over £1000 of their own money to the project to cover living expenses and flight home.

The Children's Development and Protection Foundation The Children's Development and Protection Foundation (CDPF) works with Mongolian children who suffer from poverty, disease, injustice and violence. Based in the capital Ulaan Bataar, the charity runs many projects which include improving school facilities and enrolling poor families into social welfare and income generating programmes. The CDPF work with the Red Cross and other charities from Japan, Korea and the UK to try and overcome problems caused by the disintegration of the Soviet empire.

Their Route Their route takes them through eighteen countries via ex-Soviet Eastern Europe, through Istanbul into Asia, through the Caucasus region, across the Caspian Sea, into the mountainous and ancient Silk Road region of Central Asia and finally onto the vast plains of Mongolia. The route east of Turkey is largely unknown to Western people and they are looking forward to exploring the high mountains of Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan along the Pamir Highway, the ancient city of Samarkand in Uzbekistan and the vast plains of the Mongolia steppes.
